Planning for our February Meeting at Weill-Cornell

Hi All,
Thanks to Carl and TJ for hosting our Feb 25th NEC meeting at Weill Cornell. We'll be sending room information (as well as call in information) soon.
For those of you who joined us on our NEC teleconference on Dec 20, 2010 - we discussed issues about augmenting collaborations (white papers, presentation, consultations) and strategies to increase awareness of the breadth and depth of expertise within the NEC. We also discussed updating our members expertise inventory.

I am delighted to share with you that Marc Nivet, Ed.D., Chief Diversity Officer at AAMC will be able to join us for our Feb meeting. He will discuss where he sees the future going and we will be able to dialog about collaborative ventures on cross cultural education, health care reform and diversity initiatives. Although I'm sure you heard him at the AAMC Annual Meeting, for those unable to attend, here is a link to his presentation

If you want a change, I'll send you the blank PPT slides for you to update and send back. Be aware, in the slide show format, less is more on descriptors (in terms of visibility.

GOALS

1. Foster communication around best practices for teaching and practicing culturally effective care.

2. Build a collaboration of leaders in this field dedicated to designing and implementing new teaching models and evaluation strategies

3. Impact health policy and legislation on both regional and national levels.

4. Create and sustain a community of caring - a consistently supportive venue for its members as they address the challenges of effecting social change in health care delivery, work toward eliminating health disparities and collaborate to enhance quality of healthcare for all people and communities.

Specific Activities and Tools

1. National and regional advocacy on development of LCME guidelines for cultural competence education;

2. Health policy initiatives for state legislation on cultural competency training of physicians;

3. Consultancy on cross cultural education and policy;

4. Collaborative teaching workshops, seminars and training;

5. Organizational assessment and change seminars and training;

6. Grand Rounds presentations;

7. Development of educational materials (curricula, books, electronic media etc.) including peer review;

8. Collaboration and sharing of educational materials

9. Compilation of resources (e.g. books, websites, useful videos, teaching curricula, published articles from Consortium members)

10. CME; GME; Health professional educational materials and training.

About Us

The North East Consortium on Cross Cultural Medical Education and Practice consists of teaching faculty and other healthcare professionals from diverse cultural and medical specialties from 12 medical schools.

For more than 10 years, NEC has maintained a strong network to advance the integration of teaching and practice models of cultural competencies education into undergraduate and graduate training and medical practice.
